Do vice-presidential choices issue?

.SHORTLY AFTER introducing his run for the Democratic election in 1960, John F. Kennedy stated: "I do not recollect a single instance where a vice-presidential prospect contributed a selecting vote." Still, the north-easterner chosen Lyndon Johnson as his running-mate, hoping that the politician coming from Texas would assist him in southern states. Johnson tore throughout the South in a train nicknamed the LBJ Express, arriving at rallies in a ten-gallon hat to the stress of "The Yellow Rose of Texas". After he succeeded, Kennedy confessed that "our team could not have lugged the South without Johnson". That Johnson "supplied the South" is currently obtained wisdom. But just how much distinction do vice-presidential selections actually create in political elections?
